severe dry skin

Seriously.  That's what the physician's assistant we saw this morning said.  She used the words eczema and cradle cap, then said, "basically, he has severely dry skin."

I so didn't need to go in.

I so lost my mind over dry skin.

I so need to see a counselor.  If you see one, how did you go about finding her - or him?

Using cornstarch on his diaper area and switching to Seventh Generation has helped the bottom rash.  Considering cloth diapers.  Go ahead, tell me what you use, why you love them.  I'm listening. We are still battling rashy spots behind the knees, on his face, a bit on the chest, neck, and tons on his head. And to make matters worse, the boy drools all.day.long.

When we were at the birth center yesterday our midwife put calendula, chamomile and coconut oil into a salve for him.  We are going to use that for now and if that doesn't work we'll move on, figure something else out.  Love our midwife, love that whole center.  We've been blessed a thousand times over by these women who have turned a job into a passion and a workplace into a home.

What a week!

There has been good news this week: my fourth! nephew was born safely last night. He is a sweet boy, his mama did a great job, my brother helping her to birth naturally like she wanted to.

And Bennett has learned how to push his bottom in the air while on his stomach.  That's the beginning of a crawl!

He is also sitting!

And falling.

And grabbing his toes.

He's scooting!!! Oh my goodness! I guess they do grow. :)

We did cloth part time with Eliyana. I did use disposables most of the time when we went out. There's a mind-boggling number of different variations of cloth diapers, and bazillions of different dirty diaper storage and washing theories! Seriously. The internet is FULL of cloth diaper advice, some of it is in conflict with other bits of advice, and much of it is simply opinion and completely optional. The world will NOT end if you don't presoak your dirty diapers with Borax, I promise. :)

I preferred all-in-one diapers like Bummis, but I know a lot of people who vastly prefer prefolds (large rectangular diapers, folded and placed inside a wool/plastic diaper cover). It's so hard to know which one you'll prefer unless you try, so I'd suggest getting a decent quality (not from Babies R Us) prefold and cover as well as an all-in-one diaper and seeing what you like best.

Congrats on being an auntie again!!!!

Bum Genius diapers have been incredible for us. They've been washed hundreds of times and are still hanging on in their third year of use. No rashes around here! But, when a little bum starts to look even mildly irritated, we use dry clay powder from Redmond Trading Company and it always does the trick.

That's too bad that the lotions don't seem to be working for the eczema. Clio has really responded to the aquaphor. Hopefully you find something that works. If the cradle cap is bothering you I've read that putting olive oil on the baby's head and then gently scraping it away helps. I've never tried it myself though.

We only use cloth with Clio. We couldn't get over diaper rash until we did. We use prefolds and thirstie covers at home and Bumgenius 4.0 for day care and overnight. They work really great for us and she's only had a rash a couple of times. You are limited to using certain butt creams with cloth (we use California baby) and finding the right washing regimen can be challenging. If you are interested in hearing more shoot me an email. There are soooo many options it is mind boggling.

Hi! I just randomly saw your post through Lori's blog (of Lori Does Maryland) and thought I would throw in a few bits of info that have helped my family. My husband has Type A Dermatitis and his skin is aslo "severe" for lack of a better word. Nothing really helps, but he has been using the tea tree oil products from Paul Mitchell and that has helped more then most anything we've ever tried ... especially the lavender mint body wash and hair stuff. As far as diapers go, we have used the Osocozy prefolds with bummies covers during the day and the thirsties duo wraps with an extra hemp liner at night. We have never had an issue with diaper rash since switching. We use fleece wipes and I make a homemade "wipes juice" using essential oils from Whole Foods, natural baby wash, olive oil and water. It works amazingly well and keeps skin so happy, plus we know exactly what's going on her so there's no need to wonder what could be causing issues. Also, I use Charlies all natural for laundry, especially the diapers, but really for all our clothes. It is residue, dye, chemical, etc, etc free ... it works SO well, and has helped my husbands skin SO much. It costs about 45 dollars for the bottle, but it literally lasts for a year of doing laundry. No joke. If you need more info there is a company here where I live (in Colorado) called Baby Cotton Bottoms. The owner is super smart and knowledgeable and always wanting to help people figure out what will be best for them and their baby. You can google the store and it will give you her email and number. She's prompt with response and seriously knows what she's talking about :) Anyway, hope that was even a tiny bit helpful. Good luck!

I would highly recommend a trial of cloth nappies if someone does such things round you. We haven't bought any cloth yet but that's just because I have a hugely fat baby whose jeans barely fit him even before putting him in cloth and I haven't found a way round that yet :/ But the ones I thought I'd like were not the ones I got along with, so trying before you by is definitely good.

Having said that, and I haven't tried them myself, I've only heard good things from people who have tried the BumFlip Genius nappies.

If you have coconut oil for B and run out of butter it also makes a good substitute on toast. Yum :)

I have taken J to the doctors' surgery for WAY smaller things than that. xx

Glad to hear you got an answer about Bennett's rash - and it was totally worth the trip to the doctor's!

Cloth diapers - we use Rumparooz and like them (one size, pocket diapers). But I haven't really tried too many other cloth to compare them with. We have a few one size Fuzzi Bunz and they seem good too (but my dh doesn't like the snaps on them as much, but it's not like they're hard to figure out). We got most of our diapers used off of E.bay, so you could check there to buy some cheaper before committing to anything.

And therapist - I don't know where I'd be without mine. But my grad school was also in counseling, so I'm a bit biased as to how I think counseling can be so beneficial. I know I was really lucky to click with my therapist right away. I got her name from both my midwife and a woman that I took a birthing from within class from. So I'd start by asking people you know and trust who they know in the community - from either personal experience and/or professional connections. I'd recommend asking your midwife, her assistant, Dr. B, etc. to see who they know. Then if the therapist has a website, check it out, get a feel for them, call them, see if they do a free 15-20 min. meet and greet kind of appt (or maybe something over the phone). And what "research" tells us about therapy, is that the most important factor for it to be beneficial is to work with someone you like - their methods, training, etc are important too, but a good relationship between therapist and client is key. And if you don't like the first person you meet, try again. At least in my community, there are a LOT of therapists out there, and not all of them are good ones, and certianly not all of them would be a good fit for you. Happy therapist hunting if you decide to give it a try! :)

We use regular old prefold diapers (specifically OsoCosy unbleached, but I think any premium quality diaper is good) just folded in thirds and stuck inside a thirsties duo wrap or a blueberry coverall. At night, we use a bumGenius stuffed with the 2 inserts it comes with and an infant prefold sandwiched between. I swear my son get diaper rash every single time we try a disposable diaper, but we never have an issue with the cloth.

As for the rash, I also have a super sensitive dry skin lad, and I find that exfoliating helps a lot. I just use a baby washcloth and no soap in the bathtub (I only wash his hair and butt/crotch) and then use tons of lotion daily. Still, the cheek and upper arm bumps are persistent. My pediatrician says what remains is keratosis pilaris which will probably get better in the warmer months.
